Updated!

I have finally updated!

I’m not sure how I got so far behind, but all of my patterns are now here! Since my last update I have been published in Jane Austen Knits and released several self-published designs. My children’s patterns Navy Pier and Olga have both done quite well, and I have added several art deco-inspired accessories (with more to come!) this spring.

Stay tuned for some tips and tricks! I have written up a post about substituting yarn that I hope will be helpful, and am working on the site layout so that it will be easy to find and use. I appreciate your patience!

Dorothy Cloche

Knitted from the brim up, Dorothy is the second in a series of 1920s-inspired cloches, following Ginger. Dorothy starts with a garter brim and decorative portrait frame created with short rows. Using two gorgeous shades of Malabrigo Rios (or your favorite worsted weight hand dyed yarn) this is a challenging but fun knit!

If Dorothy and Ginger are purchased together, OR if you have already purchased Ginger, Dorothy will automatically be half price.

SIZE
baby [toddler, child/tween, teen/adult small, adult large]

MEASURES
16.75 [18.25, 19.75, 21.3, 22.85] inches

GAUGE
21 sts and 28 rnds equal 4 inches in stockinette stitch
with larger needles

YARN
Malabrigo Yarns Rios (100% Merino, 210 yards/100 grams)
Color A—1 skein Coco, Color B—1 skein Glazed Carrot

NEEDLES US #5, 16-inch circular and set of 5 DPNs
US #3 16-inch circular
Or needle size to obtain gauge

NOTIONS
8 stitch markers (1 distinct for end of round)
tapestry needle to weave in ends large
decorative button or brooch (optional)

PATTERN NOTES
Choose a size that is as close to your actual head circumference as possible. Dorothy works best with no ease to a small amount of positive ease. Shown in Adult Large on a 22.5-inch head.

Although the brim begins with a larger number of cast-on stitches, it does not have much of a flare to it because of the smaller gauge. For more flare, try casting on (and decreasing) more stitches.

SKILLS NEEDED
Knitting in the round, short rows, decreasing.

Anatidae

Anatidae is the animal family that includes ducks, swans, and geese.

I based this textured cowl on the popular quilt pattern Flying Geese. Both are made up of triangles that look like geese flying in formation.

I love the way the simple pattern of knits and purls showcases the beautiful hand-dyed yarn!

PATTERN NOTES
Instructions are given for fine gauge with medium and heavy gauges in brackets: fine (medium, heavy). Size may be adjusted by casting on 16 more or fewer stitches. Each repeat will add or subtract 2.75 (4, 5) inches.

For the medium gauge, choose DK for a drape-y look like the fine gauge sample, or worsted for a more shapely cowl, like the heavy gauge sample.

Please note: the heavy gauge sample used every inch of yarn. Consider purchasing a second skein as insurance. (You can always make a hat to match with the leftovers!)

The shawl pin is by Designs By Romi, from the Elements collection.

Ginger Cloche

Knitted from the top of the crown down, Ginger is a 1920s-inspired cloche with an asymmetrical brim, knitted with worsted weight yarn at a tighter-than-recommended gauge for a firm fabric that will keep its shape without the extra step of felting. Choose a contrast brim color for an extra pop of color!

Gracefully

A garter lace edging makes this simple hat as special as the yarn it’s knitted from! Perfect for the whole family, and using just one skein of Koigu Kersti—or about 50 grams of your favorite dk or light worsted yarn.

The hat’s name is a little bit of a pun: my model is my daughter Grace, but I also like the way the garter lace curves gracefully around the wearer’s face.
